The Godfather cocktail emerged in the mid-1970s, first appearing in print in Brian F. Rea’s 1976 cocktail book. Named after the 1972 Marlon Brando film — and reportedly Brando’s own favorite drink — it became synonymous with the Studio 54 era’s cocktail culture. The recipe is disarmingly simple: Scotch whisky and amaretto over ice in an old-fashioned glass. The smoky depth of Scotch meets the sweet almond warmth of amaretto, creating something greater than the sum of two ingredients. Along with the Amaretto Sour, it’s one of only two amaretto cocktails to achieve true classic status.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 oz Scotch whisky
- 3/4 oz amaretto almond liqueur
Instructions
- Pour ingredients into an old-fashioned glass over ice and serve.
- *Bourbon may be substituted for scotch, if preferred.
