In 1983 at London’s Soho Brasserie, bartender Dick Bradsell received a request from a young model who wanted something that would ‘wake me up and f*** me up.’ He reached for the espresso machine next to his station and created what he initially called the Vodka Espresso — a shake of vodka, fresh espresso, coffee liqueur, and sugar. The drink was renamed the Espresso Martini during the ‘tini craze of the 1990s, and it has only grown in popularity since. Bradsell is credited with revolutionizing London’s cocktail scene, and this caffeinated classic — with its signature three-coffee-bean garnish — may be his most enduring legacy.
