Lemouroudji

Lemouroudji is a traditional West African ginger lemonade made by simmering fresh ginger in water with lemons and sugar, sometimes with a hint of cayenne pepper. The ginger is intense and warming, the lemon is tart, and the optional cayenne adds a slow burn at the finish. A spicy, bold drink with deep cultural roots.

Ingredients

  • 2 pieces ginger
  • 1 gal water
  • 1 lb lemons
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ground cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Juice the lemons.
  2. Peel and grate the ginger.
  3. Place the grated ginger and a liberal dash of the cayenne pepper into a piece of cheesecloth, and tie it into a knot.
  4. Let soak in the water.
  5. After 15 minutes or so, add the sugar, and the lemon juice.
  6. Chill, and serve.
