Lemouroudji is a traditional West African ginger lemonade made by simmering fresh ginger in water with lemons and sugar, sometimes with a hint of cayenne pepper. The ginger is intense and warming, the lemon is tart, and the optional cayenne adds a slow burn at the finish. A spicy, bold drink with deep cultural roots.
Ingredients
- 2 pieces ginger
- 1 gal water
- 1 lb lemons
- 1 cup sugar
- ground cayenne pepper
Instructions
- Juice the lemons.
- Peel and grate the ginger.
- Place the grated ginger and a liberal dash of the cayenne pepper into a piece of cheesecloth, and tie it into a knot.
- Let soak in the water.
- After 15 minutes or so, add the sugar, and the lemon juice.
- Chill, and serve.
