A drink with roots tracing back to 1830s colonial America. Dark rum, molasses, and boiling water with a cinnamon stick — sailors and dockworkers drank this for warmth when fine ingredients weren't available. The molasses deepens the rum's natural sweetness, the hot water opens up the flavors, and the cinnamon adds spice. Historic, simple, and legitimately good on a cold night.
Ingredients
- 3 oz dark rum
- 2 tsp molasses
- 4 oz boiling water
- 1 cinnamon stick
Instructions
- Dissolve the molasses in a mug with some boiling water.
- Add the cinnamon, a lemon twist and the remaining water.
- Float rum on top and ignite.
- Let the flame burn for a few seconds then stir to extinguish it and sprinkle some nutmeg on top to garnish.
