The Rum Runner originated at the Holiday Isle Tiki Bar in Islamorada, Florida Keys, in the late 1950s or early 1970s (accounts vary). The story goes that the bar had a surplus of rum and tropical liqueurs, so the bartenders blended them together rather than let them go to waste. Rum, blackberry brandy, banana liqueur, lime juice, and a dash of grenadine — it’s a tropical fruit bomb with a deep berry undertone. The name nods to the Prohibition-era smugglers who ran rum through the Florida Keys from the Caribbean, and the drink has been a Keys staple ever since.
