The Dry Rob Roy is to the Rob Roy what the Dry Martini is to the original Martini — a drier, more austere variation using dry vermouth in place of sweet. The standard Rob Roy was created in 1894 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York to celebrate the premiere of an operetta based on Scottish folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor. This dry version pairs Scotch whisky with dry vermouth and a twist of lemon peel, stirred and strained into a cocktail glass. The result is crisper and more spirit-forward, letting the character of the Scotch come through with less sweetness to hide behind.
