A dirty soda is a soft drink with extra flavours and, often, a creamy ingredient. This home version combines Dr Pepper, unsweetened coconut cream, vanilla syrup and a small squeeze of lime. It is alcohol-free, but regular Dr Pepper contains caffeine.
Ingredients
- 12 oz (355 ml) chilled Dr Pepper
- 1 oz (30 ml) unsweetened coconut cream, stirred smooth
- 1/4 oz (7.5 ml) vanilla syrup
- 1/4 oz (7.5 ml) fresh lime juice
- 1 lime wedge, for garnish (optional)
- Ice cubes
Instructions
- Use a large glass of at least 20 oz (600 ml) so there is room for the soda, ice and cream.
- Add ice, vanilla syrup and lime juice to the glass. Pour in the chilled Dr Pepper slowly.
- Stir the coconut cream until smooth in its container, then measure and pour it over the soda.
- Give the drink one or two gentle stirs to leave some cream marbling. Do not shake a sealed container of carbonated soda.
- Add the optional lime wedge and serve immediately while the soda is fizzy.
Serve in
Large highball glass, at least 20 oz / 600 ml
Preparation notes
- Unsweetened coconut cream is the thick coconut product, not sweetened cream of coconut. Check the label; a sweetened product will need less vanilla syrup.
- Chill the soda and cream first. Cold ingredients keep the drink fizzy and reduce the amount of ice that melts during assembly.
- This is a home recipe rather than a claim to reproduce a particular soda-shop drink. Vanilla, coconut and citrus measures vary between shops.
- The drink is best assembled individually. Pouring and stirring a large batch releases the carbonation before everyone is served.
