The original cocktail. Bourbon, a dash of bitters, mineral water, and sugar muddled together over cracked ice — this is the drink that started it all. Dating to the early 1800s, it was simply called "a whiskey cocktail" before more elaborate drinks appeared and drinkers started requesting theirs "the old-fashioned way." Sugar tempers the bourbon, bitters add complexity, and the water opens the spirit up.
